The Michigan Transportation Team (MTT) says now is the time for legislators to act and fix our transportation system in its new 'Don't Forget About Our Roads' ad campaign. MTT has launched this campaign in the midst of pothole season at a time when it is most evident that our roads and bridges are in dire need of funding.

MTT wants legislators to take these crumbling roads seriously by addressing transportation funding and the risk that this seasonposes to drivers in Michigan. The advertising campaign includes radio and billboards reminding legislators, Don't Forget About Our Roads. The point of the advertising is to remind legislators that there is more work to be done besides the budget and Single Business Tax replacement during this session.

"At our current funding level, we can't make the necessary long-term fixes that would eliminate or reduce the damaging effects of things like winter thaw," said Mike Nystrom, vice president of government and public relations at the Michigan Infrastructure and Transportation Association and co-chair of MTT. "The Legislature has the ability to tackle many priorities at once and now is the time to address transportation funding."

According to the Mackinac Center for Public Policy, congestion and auto damage from potholes alone cost each Michigan motorist more than $318 per year, for a total of $2.2 billion in annual expense. The expense also falls on municipalities who work overtime to fill the holes during the spring months.

Michigan has an annual estimated funding shortfall of $700 million for its state transportation system and at least $2 billion more for its local roads.

Sign the Petition

The Michigan Transportation Team (MTT) recently announced an online petition drive for citizens who are tired of driving on pothole-riddled streets. Although the petition is non-binding and will not change the law, the names of petition signers will be presented to state policymakers to demonstrate the level of support in Michigan for investing in our state’s infrastructure.
