Just in case anyone doubted that our roads were crumbling, it's official. The Michigan Asset Management Council's annual report for 2008 indicates that 32 percent of Michigan's major roads -- those eligible for federal aid -- are in poor condition. That's up from 26 percent a year earlier. The report, out this week, also looked at the 10,600 miles of local roads in Michigan for the first time and found a grim picture: 43 percent of them are in poor condition. The price tag for restoring the roads would be $7.2 billion, double what it would have cost five years ago, the council said. This reinforces the case for lawmakers to act on a reasonable gasoline tax increase to fix roads faster.

Sign the Petition

The Michigan Transportation Team (MTT) recently announced an online petition drive for citizens who are tired of driving on pothole-riddled streets. Although the petition is non-binding and will not change the law, the names of petition signers will be presented to state policymakers to demonstrate the level of support in Michigan for investing in our state’s infrastructure.
