ROCHESTER HILLS: Bridge beam fails; lane shut till '12

A Rochester Hills bridge will lose a lane for at least the next three years after crews discovered a failed support beam that can't be repaired immediately because of a lack of road funding, officials said Tuesday.

The Road Commission for Oakland County said maintenance workers closed the right westbound lane of Avon Road just east of Livernois over the Clinton River on Monday. The closure reduces Avon to three lanes.

Road Commission spokesman Craig Bryson said crews checked the bridge in response to complaints about potholes on the 45-year-old span and determined that one of its beams had failed and was beginning to collapse.
