County OKs 5-cent gas tax

Beginning Jan. 1, 2008, county residents will pay an additional 5 cents a gallon in gasoline tax.

Despite the protests of several residents, the Okeechobee County Board of County Commissioners unanimously voted to increase the county gasoline tax by an additional 5 cents at their meeting Tuesday, June 12. The tax will remain in effect until Dec. 31, 2017.

Currently, residents pay 7 cents a gallon in county gasoline tax. That tax was to expire on Aug, 31, 2008. The board unanimously voted to extend that 7-cent tax until Dec. 31, 2017.

Therefore, beginning Jan. 1, 2008, county residents will pay a total of 12 cents a gallon in gasoline tax.
