If you want safer bridges here in Michigan, be prepared to pay for it. Transportation officials came together calling local bridges a threat to public safety. This comes one week after a deadly bridge collapse in Minnesota. Every time you drive these days, you likely ask yourself, am I safe?

Vicki Barnett, Michigan Municipal League President: "If you are the person on the bridge when it has a critical failure and crashes, it's a 100% big-deal problem."

Rich Studley, Michigan Chamber of Commerce: "The situation in Minnesota could happen in Michigan if we don't take action to address the key issues."

Right now in Michigan thousands of bridges are aging, torn up and worn out. 28% are considered deficient, making Michigan far worse than Minnesota.

Mike Nystrom, Michigan Infrastructure & Transport: "We need to take a good, hard look at a comprehensive long-term solution that will help us ever avoid a situation like that."

A coalition of business, government and transportation leaders all gathered at the Capitol, calling on lawmakers to do more. The group's solution- raising the gas tax. Right now you pay 19 cents state tax on each gallon of gas. This plan would eventually raise the tax to 28 cents. The average driver would pay $5-$10 more each month. Upping taxes would bring in one billion dollars a year. The money would be used directly to fix Michigan roads and bridges. Spending money now to avoid far worse costs down the road.

Sign the Petition

The Michigan Transportation Team (MTT) recently announced an online petition drive for citizens who are tired of driving on pothole-riddled streets. Although the petition is non-binding and will not change the law, the names of petition signers will be presented to state policymakers to demonstrate the level of support in Michigan for investing in our state’s infrastructure.
