The Monroe County Road Commission says they had to slash 20 percent of its work force last year, which means fewer snow plow trucks on Michigan roads.

For schools, it may mean staying closed longer. Schools in Monroe County were closed again on Thursday, almost 24 hours after it stopped snowing. There were still several inches of snow in many of the streets.

"To error on the side of safety for our children in our district, we believe it was best not to send our children to school and have our busses on the road," said MPS Transportation Director Jerry Oley.

For residents, the longer wait for clear roads makes it tough getting back to work. Realtor Marygrace Liparoto said, "I got stuck in the road when I made my turn. You see these roads -- unless you have 4-wheel drive, you couldn't get through safely."
