GENESEE COUNTY -- 33 of the biggest bridges in the county are structurally deficient, with some element of each in poor condition, according to an updated report from the Michigan Department of Transportation.

The report rates 191 bridges and overpasses that are 20 feet or more in length. MDOT employs more than 20 bridge inspectors who evaluate the structures, including 191 in the county.

Of the 191 large bridges here, 60 more are considered structurally obsolete, meaning the design of the structure is outdated with lower load-carrying capacity, narrower shoulders or less clearance than bridges built to current standards.

Statewide, 429 of 4,401 bridges are rated as structurally deficient in the report, meaning they may require rehabilitation or replacement at some time in the future, according to a news release from MDOT.

Sign the Petition

The Michigan Transportation Team (MTT) recently announced an online petition drive for citizens who are tired of driving on pothole-riddled streets. Although the petition is non-binding and will not change the law, the names of petition signers will be presented to state policymakers to demonstrate the level of support in Michigan for investing in our state’s infrastructure.
